What a Simple Phonics Lesson Can Look Like
One of the biggest misconceptions about teaching phonics is that lessons need to be long, rigid, or highly structured. In reality, simple and consistent is often the most effective approach.
Once students know the alphabet, you can begin working on letter names and sounds using short, engaging lessons.
A typical phonics lesson might include a mix of activities like:
- Singing the alphabet while pointing to each letter
- Practicing writing a small group of letters in sequence
- Playing a simple letter-based game
- Building letters with hands-on materials (Play-Doh, blocks, drawing)
- Watching a short, age-appropriate alphabet video
- Completing one workbook page — or just part of one for younger learners
The key is variety. Keep lessons short, light, and consistent, and feel free to adjust based on what your students enjoy most. You don’t need to do everything every time — even a few well-chosen activities can make a big impact.
