Every person in the world, at some point in their life, had difficulty learning something.
We’ve all struggled at one time or another with trying to learn something, whether it was following instructions to assemble a product or learning to cook.
And what do adults do when they get into trouble? They back up. They find where it made sense to them and they fix the snag then continue from there.
If a student is stumbling or hesitating and just not quite getting it, you back them up. You keep backing up until you find that spot where they were bright and they loved learning. And when you find the step they missed — and you will — have them practice plenty. If they aren’t happier and brighter, then back up further. Find that trouble spot that they didn’t totally understand — even if you have to start at the very beginning. From there, you move forward, and check every little step, no matter how small.
Backing up and redoing all that work is time consuming and it’s not easy. But continuing the struggle and inevitably failing is even harder.
