Learning all the short vowel sounds at one time can be confusing!
To a new reader, the five short vowel sounds can sound almost the same.
So teach them one at a time. Practice, practice, practice until they don’t have to stop and think about the sound. They just know it. And then you move onto the next vowel sound! Focus mostly on the new sound but occasionally review the ones previously learned. Next thing you know, they can tell you all the sounds without getting confused or hesitating. Always teach the vowels one at a time.
