A Simple Way to Teach Blending – From How to Teach Anyone to Read

How to Teach Anyone to Read

One of the most important steps in teaching a child to read is helping them understand how to blend sounds together. My book, How to Teach Anyone to Read, offers a clear, hands-on approach to mastering this skill.

Here’s an excerpt from Step 7: Blending Vowel-Consonant:

“To teach them how to combine both sounds, say A-A-A-A and then without pausing, say the B sound. Keep doing it over and over until they have that light-bulb moment.
Or you can use alphabet cards. Say the A sound while moving
the A card slowly toward the B card (keep saying the A sound).
When the cards finally touch, switch to saying the B sound.
Try giving your student a word ending in the sound of AB,
such as cab, dab, gab, lab, nab. Stretch out the last two
sounds, so your student can hear that they are the same as the
two letters you’re working on."

This strategy is just one of many found in How to Teach Anyone to Read—a practical, step-by-step guide for teaching reading from the ground up.
