At First Step Phonics, we know that consistent, joyful reading practice can make a huge difference—especially for early readers still mastering foundational skills. That's why we’re sharing a few simple (and realistic!) ways to keep reading part of your summer routine:
🌞 Keep It Light and Fun Let your child choose what they read—even if it’s a comic book, a recipe, or the back of the cereal box! Any reading is good reading.
🎯 Build In a Bit of Structure Set aside 15–20 minutes a day for relaxed reading time. No pressure—just a calm, consistent window that keeps their reading muscles active.
📚 Use the Tools They Already Know If your child is working through our phonics steps, let them revisit familiar words, sound out silly blends, or reread favorite stories. Repetition builds confidence.
🏞️ Take It Outside Whether it's a beach blanket or a shady spot in the yard, a change of scenery can make storytime extra exciting.
📅 Library Programs = Extra Motivation Check out your local library’s summer reading program—many offer fun goals and prizes!
Your child has worked hard all year. Keeping reading going during summer doesn’t have to be overwhelming. A little bit each day goes a long way.
